Koh Samui Weather: When Is the Rainy Season?

Koh Samui weather. The endlessly annoying question about the weather... What's the weather like in December? What about April? What about next year? What about in 5 years?! And when exactly is the rainy season??? In the following, we want to tackle the topic of "Koh Samui weather" once and for all, and answer every question about it! Hopefully!     Let's get straight to the point! Weather forecasts for Koh Samui are garbage!! They simply fail to come true 99.9% of the time! Even the day before, it's still completely uncertain how tomorrow's weather will turn out. Rain? Sun? Nobody knows! I can still clearly remember the forecasts from my first trips to Thailand. Rain, rain, rain, and nothing but rain, according to "every" weather service! And what actually happened? Sun, sun, sun, and nothing but sun! And that's really not surprising at all! When you consider that Koh Samui has its own little microclimate, with different weather zones across the island, it becomes clear why the usual weather services are so completely unreliable! It can be raining in Lamai while the sun is shining in Chaweng and Hua Thanon, and at the same time it might be raining in Bophut and Nathon while Maenam gets sunshine instead... Huh?.... Yes! That's exactly how it works! So what's weather service xyz supposed to do with that? Is rain forecast for Koh Samui or not? How can that even be answered? Well... it simply can't... Not to mention that any given rain shower usually only lasts a "few" minutes. It's extremely rare for it to rain non-stop for an entire day! So, as mentioned at the start: ignore weather forecasts of any kind and don't stress yourselves out! The weather comes as it comes! And either way, it stays warm all year round!       A lot of nonsense tends to get spread around on this topic... Some sources even claim that the rainy season on Koh Samui starts in June... Absolute rubbish! That might be true for other regions in Thailand, sure, but not for Koh Samui! And actually, it's incredibly easy to pin down the rainy season on Koh Samui: it falls, very precisely, between 01.11. and 15.12.! Why? Because the Thais themselves should know best! Every year, right during that exact period, they deliberately close the Angthong Marine Park! (not entirely, but for the most part) If you also analyse the weather data from recent decades (see image), that closure lines up pretty closely with what actually happens in reality. It's worth stressing, though, that the rainy season is increasingly shifting later, into December. Where in the past the whole of October used to count as rainy season, these days it's increasingly December (yes, almost into January) instead, while October counts less. So the rainy season? Late October to late December!! That period defines the current rainy season on Koh Samui! It's also worth mentioning straight away that it absolutely doesn't have to rain every single day during this period! It can just as easily rain in February, or in March, April, May, June, and so on. As already explained regarding weather forecasts, it's simply impossible to give an exact prediction. What you can say with certainty, though, is that rain is most likely within that particular period! Aside from that, Koh Samui is fundamentally a great destination 365 days a year! It's always very warm! So there's no reason for unnecessary worry!

    A problem Koh Samui has to deal with every year... Far too often, foreign media — especially Western outlets — push doomsday scenarios! Monsoon alert on Koh Samui! Storm of the century hits Koh Samui! Flooding on Koh Samui! And who knows what else... Then, for example, our dear colleagues from "abroad" send out their star journalists to photograph simple puddles on Koh Samui — the kind that form in low-lying stretches of road where rainwater collects and can't drain away fast enough — in a way that inevitably gives readers the impression of a flood. Yet anyone who actually lives on Koh Samui and drives through those stretches every day knows perfectly well that they're simply big puddles! One example would be the dip near Big C in Chaweng. Journalism of the worst kind. They couldn't care less that they're spreading nothing but falsehoods and inevitably damaging tourism in the process... So our advice, and our request, is to consistently ignore headlines like that and instead ask the people who actually live there! Via Facebook and the like!     While we're on the subject! Of course you can be unlucky sometimes and the weather turns bad, sure… But don't let it get you down! It comes as it must, and there's nothing you can do to change that! It's no different back home for many of us, wherever that is - plenty of people have experienced far worse "storms" and rainy days there!
